THIS GENEALOGY IS DEDICATED TO

All the Gandre kinfolk I know

And some I don't know but have heard about

Because there's not a bad one anywhere.

AND

To my Mother

Ruby Irene (Heinemeyer) Gandre

without whose help this could not have been accomplished.

Thanks, Mama!

PREFACE

This was written for my children who may someday take an active interest in their ancestors' history. Therefore I have tried to address my remarks to them using myself as a reference point, as in "my mother Ruby." Putting this information into order has been an invaluable way to learn more about my ancestors as well as near and dear contemporary relatives. I think all the cousins will agree that we have been very fortunate in all of our relatives both past and present. I hope to expand our Gandre Tree to include those Gandres found in Wisconsin (discussed in Chapter B) and those in Germany from which we descended. Please let me know of any errors. I'm sure there are some and I'd like to correct all of them if possible.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I am very thankful to my mother, Ruby Irene (Heinemeyer) Gandre for her help and encouragement. Without her love of family (and puzzles), her persistence in gathering material, her dedication to newspaper clipping, her

tireless effort to track down photos, and her cheerful sharing of any and all information gathered over the years, none of this could have been accomplished. As a direct result of this research, I have learned to view every new person I meet as a potential relative - to my Mother, this comes natural. All the world is her family. Thanks, Mama!

A special thanks to my dear friend Katherine Hayes (Berkley) Cannon who introduced me to the State of Texas Genealogical Archives and then cheered me on when the spirit lagged.

And of course, thanks to my husband and children for their patience when I neglected them to work on this book.

CHAPTER TWO

August Frederick Ewald Gandre

I. August Frederick Ewald Gandre was born June 1, 1859 in Peretz, Germany. He died August 26, 1932 in Cost, Texas. He married Wilhelmina Louise Bahlmann on November 23, 1881. She was the daughter of Karl Frederick and Dorothea Luisa (Wegner) Bahlmann. Wilhelmina "Mina" was born October 31, 1861 in Peretz, Germany and died November 10, 1944 in Cost, Texas. They are both buried in the Monthalia Methodist Church Cemetery in Monthalia, Texas.

The only things we know about August Gandre's forebears are mostly speculation. We know that his mother was Christine, that she was born September 12, 1837 in Germany, died February 22, 1920 in Cost Texas and was married to Karl Mann in 1867 at Alt-Grape, Pomerania. August was said to have been named after his father who went to war and never came back." Great Uncle Gus wrote that Great-Great Grandpa Mann had a brother living in Wisconsin which is possible.

We have however, found Gandres living in the same general area that August settled his family. If Christine's maiden name was Gandre then there remains the possibility that they went to Wisconsin to be near her brothers (-or brothers-in-law -I personally find it hard to believe that she would go to anyone unless they were her in-laws.). The one thing we do know about Christine Mann was that she was known as a God fearing woman and a good Mother.

Conditions in Germany in the early 1880's were terrible and the young couple dreamed of America where they and their children could better themselves. So, August, Mina and their young son Adolph left Germany April 15, 1884 on the ship Moravia to dock in New York City. They went from there to Wisconsin and stayed until October 1891. That they were intending to stay in Wisconsin is indicated by August's purchase of property in Fall River.

The cold weather aggravated his rheumatism so the couple with 3 children now moved to Cuero, Texas where their stay was rather short as August did not like the mosquitoes either. They arrived in Texas October 4, 1891 and were living in Gonzales County on November 5, 1892 according to August's Naturalization Papers. I remember hearing stories about covered wagons and the like so it was probably a memorable trip.

The story goes that August and Mina came over with her parents (or was it his parents or both sets of parents?) and the fact that Mina's brother Carl Bahlmann Jr. came over on another ship the same year as Mina and August lends credence to at least part of the story. I will continue to explore the question of who came where with whom. Both the Bahlmanns and the Gandres wound up in Texas.

August was listed as a Farmer on his death certificate but also worked for the Post Office as a mail carrier in Gonzales County at one time.

My favorite story about August was told by Mrs. Rosa Fink. Her daughter reported having shaken hands with Jesus after church on Sunday. When questioned further the child identified Mr. August Gandre as the one with whom she had shaken hands. When asked why she thought that he was Jesus, she replied, "Well, you said Jesus loves the children and he really loves me!"

The "Frauen Verein" or Ladies Aid Society of the Monthalia Methodist Church was organized in 1905 with Mina as its first President. Both these people were faithful to their God, their Church and their family and we are all fortunate to be descendents.

August and Mina also raised their oldest son's nephew. Robert L. Stearns came to them as a small boy of seven and was raised as one of their own. He requested that his big "brother" Willie Fred name his first daughter after Bob's favorite sister Bernice, which is where Aunt Bernice gets her name. For years I thought he was just another "Uncle" which indeed through love he was.

According to Mina's Family Bible they had 6 children, 5 living to adulthood. They were listed in her bible as follows:

A. Gustav "Adolph" Gandre born August 6, 1882

B. Ida Alwiene Luisa Gandre born December 1, 1884

C. Wilhelm Frederick Gandre born April 7, 1886

D. Ewald Gandre born January 9, 1891 and died January 19, 1891

E. Gustav Henry Gandre born May 27, 1897

F. Hilda Ester Gandre born January 30, 1900

G. Robert L. Stearns born July 19, 1906 (foster son)

CHAPTER THREE

Gustav “Adolph” Gandre

A. Gustav "Adolph" Gandre was born August 6, 1882 in Peretz, Germany (birth certificate says Province of Prussia -Alten Grabe) and died October 8, 1955 in Houston, Texas. On July 19, 1905 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX he married Dollye Lucile Robinson who was born May 17, 1883 in Wise Co. Texas near Decatur and died October 3, 1977 in Houston, Texas. She was the daughter of Reuben R. and Lucinda (Burch) Robinson. At 17 years of age he enrolled at Blinn College at Brenham, Texas for two years (1899-1900). His grades and general deportment indicate a good well rounded student.

He also attended Draughan's Business College in Fort Worth. Adolph worked for Humble Oil Company for over 30 years before his retirement. The 1910 Texas Census lists Adolph living in Harris CO. (Houston) with wife Lucile D., 20 years old, daughter Dorothy A. 1-5/12 years old, and sister-in-law Ida Robinson 28 years old. When his wife's nephew Robert L. Stearns needed a home, Adolph brought him to Cost to his parents August and Mina Gandre who raised the boy as one of their own.

Adolph and Dollye had one daughter -

1. Dorothy Dell Gandre was born October 22, 1908 in Harris County (Houston) and died February 11, 1987 at her home in Houston, Texas. She was a nurse not only as her profession, but in her private life as well. Dorothy took care of her aged mother until her mother's death in 1977.

She had two children by her first husband, Wesley Keller Stich Sr. Her love for her Grandmother Gandre led her to name her only daughter Wilhelmina.

CHAPTER FIVE

Wilhelm Frederick "Willie Fred" Gandre

C. Willie Fred Gandre born April 7, 1886 at Fall River, Wisonsin died June 30, 1948 at Cost, Texas. He married July 29, 1908 at Cost, Texas to Fredericke "Emilie" Sassmanshausens who was born July 5, 1887 in Guadalupe Co., Texas and died January 3, 1964 at Cost, TX the daughter of Ludwig Sassmanshausens and Bertha (Riefkohl) Tolle Sassmanshausens.

For the story of "how Willie met Emilie" see page 115. Unk tells the story much better than I could. Willie and his new bride lived in Gonzales where he worked in a laundry and a cotton gin. They later moved to Bebe, Texas where he owned his own cotton gin. In 1923 he purchased the cotton gin in Cost from Anton Muenzler. He was a successful farmer and rancher, as well as a civic leader. He was a Cost School Trustee, a 4-H Club leader, a member of the Masonic Lodge and an active member of the Monthalia Methodist Church.

Willie attended Blinn College at Brenham, Texas from 1906 to 1908. The Gonzales County History Book on page 28 says that Willie was a member of the Gonzales Co. Concert Band from 1909 when it was formed until 1911-13 and that he played the clarinet and the violin although the pictures on page 78 of this book show him with an instrument looks more like a baritone or an euphonium.

When my father was in the service during the last years of World War II and I was missing him terribly, Big Daddy found a gray rock shaped like a soldier's helmet. He handed it to me and said, "Here, keep this to show to your soldier daddy when he comes home." Such comfort for a small child from such a gentle, caring man.

My favorite story may or may not be true, but I certainly hope it is. Big Daddy was asked how he and Emilie were able to arrive at church every Sunday morning with the 9 children still clean. He replied, "Well, first I bathe and get dressed and then Mama bathes and dresses Austin and we put him on the bench in the hall and I watch him. Then Mama bathes and dresses Sasman and we put him on the bench in the hall and I watch both of them. Then Mama bathes and dresses Wilson and we put him on the bench in the hall and I watch all 3 of them. Etc. Then Mama bathes and dresses and we watch them all the way to church." He never said anything about KEEPING them clean past that point.

They made a great team. My father used to say he'd recognize his mother's sugar cookies no matter where or when he ate them and I'm sure all of us who were privileged to taste them would agree. She not only was a great cook, but a good mother who still had time for her church and community.

They raised all 9 children to adulthood.
